Jekyll Island Lions Help with Beach Clean-Up

3Aug2018

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island has been hosting a beach clean-up about once a month this summer.  On 3 August in the evening, Jekyll Island Lions Thom and Pete joined a group sweeping the beach at St. Andrews picnic area for trash.  Lion Pete used the Marine Debris Tracker app on his iPhone to log all the items picked up.  The Tracker inserts the GSP coordinates after each item is found and logged.  This information goes into a central database so that scientists can do research on the types and distribution of trash found on beaches and in the ocean.

During this trip, the Lions picked up 60 pieces of trash, mostly cigarette butts, but also cans, bottles, plastic bags, rope and small plastic fragments.  Other members in the group found similar items.  It was a nice way to be outdoors and help the environment, too.
