The Jekyll Island Lions Club‘s support of the Brunswick Salvation Army‘s Red Kettle Christmas Collection Drive has been a great success. Lion Rick delivered a total of $2,326 to the Salvation Army on 26 December. That amount was based on $1,701 collected in cash donations and $625 in checks. Lion Mike coordinated the bell ringing schedule through Sign-Up Genius, an online scheduling application. The ringers included many members of the community. Jekyll Realty again supported the Club by storing the equipment and depositing the cash collected. The Club will invite local Salvation Army Captains Billie and Chris Powell to a Club meeting soon. Thanks to everyone who volunteered time to ring the bell!

Successful Fund Raisers and a Merry Christmas Dinner

The Jekyll Island Lions Club had a successful day selling Guggisberg Baby Swiss Cheese wedges and wheels on 15 December in the Jekyll Island Beach Village.  The 4-pound wheels were sold out leaving only 1-pound wedges and 2-pound wheels for the next sale in February.  Nearly an entire case of the Mascot chocolate-covered pecans were sold although the pecan halves were not as popular as at the last sale.  A number of Lions mints were also sold.  Thanks to Lions Rick, Thom, Norman and his wife Laurie, Cathy and Jim for manning the sales table!  Jekyll Realty agreed to sell the remaining cheese and pecans on behalf of the Club through Christmas Eve from their office in the Beach Village.

Meanwhile, the Lions’ bell ringing effort on behalf of the Brunswick Salvation Army has been going well.  All of the bell ringing time slots have been filled through Christmas Eve.

The Jekyll Island Lions Club had a fun Christmas dinner on 18 December at McCormick’s Grill on Jekyll Island.  President Pete received a silver centennial pin for recruiting Lion Bob S. last year.  GSP Trooper Patrick Edwards was the guest speaker and discussed the barrack’s Toys for Tots program.

Getting Ready for Another Pecan and Cheese Sale

Pecans

Jekyll Island Lions Cathy and Pete drove to the Mascot Pecan Company facility in Glennville, Georgia, on 13 December to pick up a case of large pecan halves and chocolate covered pecans to sell in the Beach Village on 15 December.  In addition to pecans, the Club will be selling Guggisberg Baby Swiss cheese wedges and wheels as well as Lions mints and maybe telephone books.  All the profits from this sale will go to charities the Club supports.

In the meantime, the Club held a board meeting on 12 December to discuss low attendance at the twice-monthly dinner meetings, the traditions at these meetings, and fund raising efforts.  Due to the holiday season, many of the board members could not attend, but enough made it to reach a quorum.

Flags and Christmas Boxes

On Thanksgiving Day, the Jekyll Island Lions Club displayed American flags in the Beach Village and Historic District from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Lions Jim, Howard, Terry, Harry and Pete volunteered to deploy the flags and take them back in at the end of the day.

At the 4 December dinner meeting, Jekyll Island Lions assembled gift boxes for the International Seafarers’ Center’s Christmas-at-Sea project.  The Lions donated items on a list distributed by the Center and then packed then into approximately 25 shoe boxes.  The boxes will be gift wrapped and handed out to seafarers coming into the Port of Brunswick over the holiday season.
