Georgia Blind Sports Association

At the Jekyll Island Lions Club board meeting scheduled for 29 August, the team will be discussing a variety of items.  Among them is a golf equipment drive for the Georgia Blind Sports Association.  The Association put out a call for equipment the first week in August and the Jekyll Island Club answered the call.  Lion Hal Simpson , who is the contact for the Association, has agreed to come to Jekyll Island in November to speak to the Club and pick up the donations.

Lions are Everywhere

Italy

The Jekyll Island Lions Club does not meet during the summer and one of the reasons is that members travel at that time.  During a recent trip to Italy, President Pete and Lion Cathy coincidentally stayed at the same hotel on Lido Island, Venice, where the local Lions Club meets.  The tile above was proudly displayed on the fence in front of the hotel.

Meanwhile, back at home, Lion Jim and President Pete have continued to collect used eye glasses over the summer.  The eye glasses will be sorted at one of the Club meetings and then Lion Jim has volunteered to deliver them to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation in Chamblee.  The left over eye glasses cases will be turned into amenity kits for the Brunswick Salvation Army homeless shelter.

Jekyll Island Lions Help with Beach Clean-Up

3Aug2018

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island has been hosting a beach clean-up about once a month this summer.  On 3 August in the evening, Jekyll Island Lions Thom and Pete joined a group sweeping the beach at St. Andrews picnic area for trash.  Lion Pete used the Marine Debris Tracker app on his iPhone to log all the items picked up.  The Tracker inserts the GSP coordinates after each item is found and logged.  This information goes into a central database so that scientists can do research on the types and distribution of trash found on beaches and in the ocean.

During this trip, the Lions picked up 60 pieces of trash, mostly cigarette butts, but also cans, bottles, plastic bags, rope and small plastic fragments.  Other members in the group found similar items.  It was a nice way to be outdoors and help the environment, too.
