The guest speaker at the 7 March meeting of the Jekyll Island Lions Club was Dr. Rick Townsend, CEO of the Golden Isles College and Career Academy. The Academy provides vocational training for students in high school so that they can get a ahead start in their careers. In addition to hands-on training, the Academy has developed partnerships with local businesses which offer working internships to students. At the end of Dr. Townsend’s presentation, Lion Howard awarded him a miniature Lion.
Also at the meeting, Mr. Butch Bishop was initiated as a Lion. Lion Butch was sponsored by Lions C.J. and Mac. Lion Butch is the owner of Maxwell’s General Store in the Beach Village on Jekyll Island as well as other businesses on the mainland. The Club enthusiastically welcomes Butch to the Club.
The weekend of 18-19 March, Caffeine and Octane at the Beach will take place at the Jekyll Island Convention Center. This car show is probably the largest in Georgia and will bring many visitors to the island. The Jekyll Island Lions Club plans to sell Guggisberg Baby Swiss Cheese wheels and Tennessee Moonshine Cakes in the Beach Village on Saturday to take advantage of the crowd size.
