Lions Clubs International offers free leadership and mangement training to its members. The courses center on running an effect club and are available either online through Lions University or in person by Lions instructors. In the past year, an instructor has presented a leadership course at a Jekyll Island Lions Club meeting, and more recently both the current Club President, Mike, and the First Vice President, C. J., attended a course in Baxley, Georgia.
On 20 August 2016, the Multiple District (MD) 18-N PDG Lillian taught a course for incoming District club officers at the Darien Lions Clubhouse. The Jekyll Island Lions Club Second Vice President, Peter, attended the session intended for Presidents, Vice Presidents, Membership Chairs, and Membership Committee members. The course covered duties and responsibilities for these officers as well as the role of the Board of Directors. The second session focused on the responsibilities of Treasurer and Secretary. Several club officers from around MD 18-N attended the course and the Darien Lions provided free snacks and drinks. Each participant later received via email the course slides, the MD 18-N District calendar, and the contact information for the District team. It was time well spent and a good opportunity to network with fellow Lions.
As was previously mentioned, Lions University offers online courses that can lead to a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate in Lionism. Jekyll Island Lion Cathy, has finished all the online course work for her bachelor’s degree and just needs to attend a USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum to graduate. Second Vice President Peter has finished the online required courses and is working on the electives. He also needs to attend a USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum as well to graduate.
